What's New at Millburn Middle School?
Welcome to your Milburn Middle School News Magazine. Enjoy!

We did we do during February, March, April, May, and June?
Wow! The school year just flew by during the last half of the year!!! Here is our final edition for the 2016-2017 School Year.
Our Scholastic Bowl made it to Regionals and our Track Team made it to State! There were a lot of personal goals achieved by both of these excellent teams. Congratulations to all that participated!
On the musical side, both our Choir and Bands gave awesome performances. And Sixth grade went to Carmel High School to see a musical performed.
Right before Spring Break, we had a BMX rider, Matt Wilhelrm, come and perform for us. We all held our breath as he jumped on his bike over three teachers laying on the floor. Don't try that at home! He also talked about Bullying and what we can do to be an Upstander, not a Bystander.
Sixth grade welcomed the Fifth Graders when they came to visit us in May. Just think, they will be the new Sixth Graders when school starts again in August!
Seventh Grade created a Genocide Museum. It was sad and gave you a lot to think about. They also were able to Skype with
Eighth grade had a Biography Tea. Students read a biography about a person they had picked, and then came to a “Tea” in the cafeteria dressed up like that person. Then our Second Graders from the Elementary building came and ‘interviewed’ them. It was really neat to see all those various, interesting people talking to our Second Graders. And at the end of May, beginning of June, the Eighth Graders traveled down to Springfield, Illinois. They went the State Capital, the Dana Thomas house, and even saw the only house that Abraham Lincoln owned in Springfield. Sounds like it was a lot of fun!

Millburn had a great showing at State!!!
There were some personal bests in Track and Field made in Peoria, Illinois in May. Thanks to all of the coaches for all their support and guidance!
There is a lot of learning going on at Millburn Middle School...
...sprinkled with fun and laughter!
Spelling Bee
In this years spelling bee they changed it up a little. Instead of having everyone come down at the very beginning, they let the first 18 go with no one down there except the judges. Then when it came down to the final nine students (or halfway), they let everyone come down and watch the end of it. The runner up was Asritha Bodepudi, and the 2017 spelling bee champion was Patrick Kilcullen. They were both spelling amazing words. I thought there was no way that they were going to spell the ones they did! Good luck to you at Regionals. (Update: Unfortunately, Millburn did not go much farther in the Spelling Bee, but we want to say Congratulations to both Patick and Asritha!)

Pictures, Pictures, Pictures!
Our Newspaper team decided that you need to see more pictures. Sooo...We have Kate Middleton speaking with some Second Graders at the Eighth Grade Biography Tea, the Jazz Band practicing before their concert, Hands-On coding in Tech, Stress-Free Activity in Advisory, Sir Isaac Newton, some of our award winning art on display, and a hologram of a Genocide survivor from the Seventh Grade Genocide museum.
Congratulations, Mr. Teipel!!!
She said," Yes!"

February, March, April, May, and June were chocked full of full all sorts of fun and activities. In the beginning of March, we had a human Foosball Game during our Data share. And we saw some awesome BMX riding tricks!
Events for the Months of November, December, and January
November was a very busy month! Millburn News Magazine met for the very first time! We had a fun and successful PBIS Rally. Who would have thought that Hungry, Hungry Hippo could be so much fun?! Students and their parents came together to share their successes at Student Led Conferences and purchase books from the book fair. And we saw a great production from our Theater group: All I Need to Know I Learned From Being a Zombie. Look for a review below.
In December, there was a Leadership Conference at Lakes High School that about 30 students from our school attended. They not only learned how to be a leader, but helped others learned to be leaders too. Our Choir put on a great Holiday Performance on December 8th and then again at our December PBIS Rally. The 8th Graders went bowling, 6th Graders exchanged White Elephant gifts, and 6th and 7th Grade rotated classrooms and played various games. And we had our first ever Square Dance Off! Congratulations to all of the teams!
January began with a bang and just kept rolling! From the mid-month raffle, to Ellis Island, to sports, to concerts, to the Spelling Bee, to our Hawaiian Activity night...we have been VERY busy!

Sixth Grade
The Middle School Theatre Club Play
By: Travis Cellucci, 6th Grade Student
The Middle School Theatre’s Club play, All I Need to Know I Learned from Being a Zombie by Scott Sigler, was an amazing show presented by students. It was full of drama, suspense, and of course…comedy! This rollercoaster ride had a lot of different stories going on all at once. It was like watching five different plays at the same time! The actors did a really good job sticking to their lines and making it look real! They did a great job. Good job to Ms. Reynolds and Mrs. Calhoun for making a great show that everyone enjoyed. I can’t wait to go see their next play. I’m sure it will be another great show!

Seventh Grade
Ellis Island – 7th Grade
On January 19th the seventh graders did an Ellis Island Simulation where they were to dress up as a character and pretend that they wanted to immigrate to America from a different country. All the seventh graders did an excellent job in portraying their person and did a fantastic job of coming up with creative costumes for their character to wear. The simulation was held in the east gym where all the seventh graders gathered to see if they would make it pass the border. Few got deported and a majority made it across. The students worked very hard to prepare for this day, they had to act as if they were in the 1900’s which would be very hard for most. Some eighth graders did come to help out on being the station directors where they were to play their part as well. The social studies teacher of seventh grade did an excellent job of organizing all of it giving it a realistic feel of what it actually was like at Ellis Island. The re-enactment was a success thanks to all the parent volunteers, teachers, and of course the immigrants!

Eighth Grade
In November and December, there was a wide variety of sports, the 6th grade boys basketball team had a great season both the A and the B team. The A team with B team player Kevin Cellucci played in a tournament and finished 3rd, great job. 7th and 8th grade girl’s basketball just started and the grade girls team is on a winning streak and seems unstoppable! Wrestling has just started and we are 1-1 on the season at events, keep it up. 6th grade boys volleyball is coming up, looking to have a great season.

Ellis Island
Have you ever wondered what it would have been like to immigrate and come through Ellis Island? You weren't assured of getting through. You had to pass various tests including a physical test and they wanted to know if you had an occupation. If you didn't have a job, you would have points taken off of your application. Fortunately, most of the seventh grade immigrants made it through! Shavali Chingre
